Creating Table of Contents

Dear Sir

I am trying to learn new computer technique and find it very hard to follow directions on MS Word. Is there any one who can explain step-by-step the construction of TOC and Index. There are many terms that are not explained and I get confused. Althou it takes lot of time to learn new techniques but that's what life is about.
